The major levels of the central nervous system

This article describes about the major categories or levels of the central nervous system. An understanding of the major levels of the cenktral nervous system will guide further from whether the signals are coming and thei memory and synapse function of the system.

The human body is a complex structure where every cell has its own designated function The designated function of a cell has further led to designated function of the body organ system.
Accordingly, the nervous system of the body can be divided into 3 major areas.
1. The Spinal cord level
2. The Lower brain/Subcortical level
3. The Higher brain/Cortical level

The Spinal cord level

The Spinal cord plays an important role of decision making. Often, the immediate responses are sent directly from the Spinal cord. The signal is not required to be sent to the brain for getting a motor response.

Many functions of the body like walking movements, withdrawal from painful objects, creating support against gravity, controlling of local blood system, stomach movements, urinary tract movements are controlled by the signals sent from the spinal cord itself.

Over here, the spinal cord gets signal from the upper levels of the

nervous system. The signal is more like a command to the spinal cord, that it should control these functions.

Lower brain/Subcortical levels

The lower brain comprises of the Medulla, Pons, Mesencephalon, Hypothalamus, Thalamus, cerebellum and the Basal Ganglia.
These areas of the brain control the activities of the body that happen subconsciously, i.e. beyond our wilful control.
Functions of the body like balance control, vision, salivation, emotional patterns like anger, excitement, sexual responses, pain reaction happen through the lower brain areas.

Higher brain/Cortical levels

The higher brain is one of the biggest memory spaces in the brain. This area performs its functions in conjunction wit hthe other areas mentioned above. The cortical area gives the precision to the actions performed by the lower brain and spinal cord.
