In the world of today where the modern Gregorian calendar and Julian calendar is followed, 1st of January is observed as New Year’s day.
According to Julian calender, 1st of January is observed as the day for Janus, who is the god of gateways and beginnings. According to Gregorian calendar, New Year’s day is marked as the day for Feast of the Naming and Circumcision of Jesus. In the days of today, the Gregorian calendar is considered as the de facto / default calendar and thus 1st of January is celebrated as public holiday. The stroke of midnight, when the date changes, is celebrated by fireworks, making New year’s resolutions and calling friends and family.
